Hearts for Change - Home

Who We Are | Leadership

Dion Brash, Founder and President

I’m a 10 year professional and have recently completed a post secondary education to help prepare me for an eventual career change into police enforcement. I started Hearts for Change after an independent trip to Kenya where I volunteered at Hosanna Children’s Home. It was my first trip abroad and I couldn’t have asked for a greater, more life changing event. I did a little more traveling before I settled in Kenya, including a safari and climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, but my time at Hosanna and with the children were the highlights of my time in Africa.

Jenny Caldwell, Vice-President

I am from Kingston, ON. I’m a graduate of Queen’s University’s Bachelor of Education program with a concentration in the Primary/Junior divisions. I enjoy learning about other cultures and practicing my Spanish language skills. I have travelled, taught ESL, and volunteered in Korea, Mexico, and South America. I first learned about Hosanna Children’s Home through emails from Dion’s first volunteering trip to Kenya. In May of 2008 I decided to sponsor a child; my involvement and support continued from there, telling family and friends about Dion’s experience. Travelling to Kenya for about 3 months starting January 2009 and meeting my sponsor child was an indescribable experience for me that I will always cherish. When Dion decided to make Hearts for Change an official charity, I was honoured to become a part of it as vice president. I continue to communicate with kids from the home via snail mail and cannot wait for the next trip back to see them all again. I am proud of what Hearts for Change is doing for the kids and the difference all the support from sponsors and well wishers has already made. Thanks to everyone who has become involved in this great cause!

Kristin Glenn, Director

I’m a lifelong adventurer, teacher, student and dreamer. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to live and travel around the globe, which has given me much perspective on my privileged place in this world. I’m a McGill graduate and am currently working towards an MA in Sociology at the University of Ottawa, where my research interests range from conflict, genocide and transitional justice to Indigenous peoples’ struggles for self–determination, food sovereignty and decolonization. My favourite things definitely include family and friends, travelling, cooking, reading, watching foreign films and camping. I am very much looking forward to visiting both Kenya and Hosanna, and cannot wait to meet my beautiful sponsor child, Naomi!

While I write this, I can’t help but reflect on how far we have come. For me this journey began with a string of naive, yet incredibly hopeful discussions with Dion about Hosanna over piles of invoices in a dingy office. Hearts for Change is a true testament to the idea that we really can achieve what we put our hearts and minds to. Thank you Dion, for believing in your dream. And thank you all for your interest in, or continued commitment to this charity. We could not do it without you.

Anna Schukei, Director

For as long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in social justice and the ways in which this can lead to transformative change. This interest led me first to gain a degree in International Development and has since led me around the world to experience the affects of effective social change, first hand. Since my travels, I have fused this interest with another passion—education. I am currently an elementary school teacher and I enjoy providing a worldly perspective to my students. Becoming involved with such a grassroots organization as Hearts for Change has provided me an opportunity to see my beliefs in action. It is an honour to be a part of, and directly involved in, an organization whose founders are so personally committed and driven towards this cause. Hearts for Change truly has impacted the lives of the children it is supporting. l am thrilled to support an organization that is dedicated to ensuring that these changes continues.
